Book Review: High 5 Banking Method
by Sahirenys Pierce
Sahirenys reached out to me to connect online. We scheduled a Zoom meeting, and, I’m not sure how she found me. I should have asked her, LOL, but I am so glad we connected.
She informed me that she is Dominican-American and lives in San Diego, and I thought that was odd because you don’t hear about Dominicans living on the West Coast often. Then she explained her family history and how they ended up in San Diego.
I told her about me and my podcast, The American Dream in the Eyes of Immigrants, and a little backstory of how that got started. I loved that we could immediately connect through our shared culture.
She then went on to tell me about her book, The High 5 Banking Method, and her work in the finance industry. I was so excited that someone like me, a second-generation Dominican-American, wrote a book about money management!
The High 5 Banking Method is a money management book, not a financial literacy book. It’s a method to save money and reach financial goals. It’s the method Sahirenys and her husband use. In the book she shares how they were able to pay almost 100K of debt, including student loans, and they were able to cash-slow their wedding.
Here’s the breakdown:
You will have 2 Checking accounts
For paying bills
To fund your lifestyle expenses
You will have 3 Savings accounts
Emergency fund
Short-term goals
Long-term goals
I loved the examples she provided for short-term goals because some of them I didn’t realize could be considered short-term goals. For example, Christmas or holiday shopping. My husband always tells me we should start a savings account for the end of the year because all of our kids’ birthdays are at the end of the year, so this time gets quite expensive. But if we save for it, we don’t have to worry about getting into debt during that time of the year.
Another short-term goal she mentioned was attending an event, such as a sporting event, a concert, or a comedy show. Once again, I never considered these short-term goals, and they are all things I enjoy attending. We love going to NBA games to watch the Warriors, or MLB to watch the Yankees, and this summer I will be attending my first comedy show!
I feel like I came across this book at such a good time because my husband and I recently opened separate accounts for different categories, and it was easy to do through SoFi!
I enjoyed my conversation with Sahirenys - her episode will release in March of 2027. In the meantime, you can read her book and start using The High 5 Banking Method to help manage your money!
With Love, Heidy
