Last week was a week of confirmation for me – that I am on the right path! God spoke clearly, on multiple days and through different people. GOD, I HEARD YOU!!!!!!
But that confirmation got me thinking about the amazing opportunities and connections He has provided lately and how I got here. So, today I want to share five tips that have helped me and can help you, whether for personal development, career advancement, or entrepreneurship journey.
1. Be Coachable
No matter where you are in your journey, one thing is for sure; you aren’t perfect. And because you aren’t perfect, there is always room for improvement. If you are trying to advance in your career, find a mentor within your company who will mentor you. In your personal life, you can hire a life coach to help you or even a spiritual mentor but be able to take suggestions and apply them – this is what it means to be coachable, or else you will not improve.
2. Be Open to New Information
One of the best ways to improve ourselves and receive opportunities is if we are open to new information. This is actually how I got into my career in medical coding, and almost ten years later, I’m a medical coding analyst. But it was because I was open to learning about the process that I received opportunities to advance my career; if not, I would probably still be a front desk receptionist (haha, no, those who know me know that’s not true).
Technology is ever-changing, and there probably is a more efficient way of doing something you’ve done the same way forever. Don’t shut yourself out from learning the new way just because you’re used to doing it one way. Remember to work smarter, not harder.
3. Be a Pleasure to Work With
This came from an internship I did earlier this year, and one of the members was moving on from the company, and she gave a few tips to us interns, but this one stood out to me the most because you never know what connections you’ll need later in life. If you’re a pleasure to work with, people will remember you and recommend you in the future. Connections are everything!
You know the saying, sometimes it’s not what you know but WHO you know, and yes, it’s true. Relationships and connections will help you reach your goals and provide opportunities, and this comes from the impression people get from you. So, no matter where you’re working or what you’re doing, be a pleasure to work with – you never know who’s watching.
4. Learn From Those Who Are Where You Want to Be.
I probably do this the most because, think about it – do you want to be a writer? A podcaster? An actor/actress? TV producer? Whatever it is you want to do – find someone who has done it successfully and learn from them. If they are offering an internship or mentoring program, APPLY! I’ve gotten two internships this year from two ladies I’ve admired from afar for years, and now God has provided me the chance to learn from them! They are where I want to be, but I’ve got to build and learn first – nothing happens overnight; you must learn and apply.
5. Be a Continuous Learner
I’ve written about this before – Never Stop Learning. Because the most successful people are successful because they are always learning, whether it’s from their own mistakes or from mentors, continue to learn. Knowledge is power; the more you know, the more you grow because no one can take away your knowledge. I mean, how did Dave Ramsey become a millionaire after going bankrupt? It’s because he had the knowledge to do it again. Be curious, read books, ask questions, and share your knowledge with others too – don’t just take; you have to give too.
I hope you find these tips helpful, and let me know which one you’ll apply to your life. Is there anything else you would add to the list? Let me know!
With Love, Heidy
