I walked into my daughter’s room one day and noticed that she had a paper on the wall above her desk that said, “I have a growth mindset.” Immediately, I was proud, but then I thought, “Does she know what a growth mindset is?” So, I asked her. She said, “A growth mindset is when you think positively and tell yourself, ‘I can do it,’ ‘I am worthy enough,’ and you think you can do anything.”
She wasn’t wrong, but not entirely correct. According to Harvard Business Review - having a growth mindset is believing that your talents can be developed through hard work, good strategies, and feedback from others. Those with a growth mindset achieve more than those with a fixed mindset because they put more effort into learning and not about looking smart.
To have a growth mindset, you’ll need to think like:
It didn’t work out this way; I’ll try another approach.
This is challenging, but I know I can do it.
Welcome feedback - actively ask for feedback from peers or your leadership
Understand that you learn from your mistakes
Putting effort is a path forward
Those who have a fixed mindset think like this:
This is hard, I can’t do it.
This is too challenging, so I will stop or avoid challenges altogether.
Ignores feedback
I made a mistake, so I’m horrible at this.
Gives up
Essentially, anyone can have a growth mindset. It’s about changing the way you think. With a growth mindset, you’ll achieve more in life. You’ll be able to live your dream life and reach your goals.
With a fixed mindset, you’ll stay stuck where you are and won’t move forward in life.
So, do you have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset? Be honest with yourself.
And I challenge you - if you have a fixed mindset to think of ways to challenge yourself on something and not give up.
With Love, Heidy
