It saddens my heart to see how divided our country is. People don’t respect differences, perspectives, or experiences. As soon as someone challenges or provides a different alternative, the name-calling personal attacks happen. And I just ask myself, “Why can’t two people share their point of view without getting defensive and start calling the other person names?”
I don’t see how this country can be united if people cannot respectfully speak to each other. In elementary school, we are taught to treat others how we want to be treated, and if we don’t have anything nice to say, not to say anything at all, and I wonder, at what age did that go out the window? Because I read the comments on social media under specific posts to see people’s opinions, it saddens my heart. People are mean and really go at each other on there.
How did this happen? How did we get here? To me, we should embrace differences because we were created with differences for a reason. We should respect one another and listen to each other. People have different experiences, and just because something doesn’t affect you directly doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect someone else. Or just because you haven’t experienced something doesn’t mean that someone else hasn’t either. We cannot take away people’s truths and experiences.
We need to start listening to one another. We need to share our stories and experiences. We need to be kinder to each other. Life is hard and challenging for everyone. But we are all here temporarily. So why not spend our limited time learning about each other and helping each other? Let’s spread love and not hate, even if you disagree with the person’s actions – it’s hard, I know, but that is the greatest commandment Jesus gave us. Love one another.
John 13:34-35 (NIV) “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
With Love, Heidy
