Why Is Prayer Important?
How often do you pray? Do you pray every day? Or do you pray whenever you are in need?
I cannot recall which Bible study I read this year prompted me to write about prayer, but I remember writing down this prompt - why is prayer important and that I wanted my prayers to be a continuous conversation with God throughout the day.
Prayer is important because it’s how we communicate with God, and regular communication with God helps us keep a relationship with Him. Just like any other relationship, communication is key to nurturing that relationship.
I pray in the morning as soon as I open my eyes and thank God for another day. While driving my daughter to school, I pray for her, her friends, and her teachers. I usually pray during my morning walk. After reading my Bible study for the day, I write out a prayer. And before going to sleep, I thank God for the day. However, I told myself this year that I’d like prayer to be an all-day, continuous conversation with God.
This is because I want to lean on and go to God first for everything. This is still something I’m working on - this is a continuous work in progress. Because whenever anything comes up that I need to figure out how to take care of it, I usually go into resolution mode. I’ll think of different solutions for the scenario at hand, but instead, I should go to God first to get the answer on how to handle the situation. My thought is that if I’m always talking to God, I’ll go to Him first. Like I said, it’s a work in progress.
Before I had this relationship with God, I would only pray occasionally. It wasn’t until I decided that I needed change in my life that I started building a relationship with God. One of the first things I did was start going to church every Sunday and join a small group. Within that small group, I was encouraged to pray, read the Bible for at least twenty minutes, and then worship.
After a few years of that, I started journaling my prayers. I would take time to go back and read my old prayers and see how God would either answer them or provide something completely different than what I asked.
I hope this message encourages you to start praying if you don’t already or to pray more often to build that relationship with God. He’s always there for you and listening; all you have to do is talk to Him, aka - pray!
With Love, Heidy
This, then, is how you should pray:
“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.”
Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV)
