Working From Home Helps Me Balance My Business Better
Two years ago, I was a guest on a podcast show called Dos Bold Latinas - a show about life as a millennial Latina mom, balancing work, and discussing topics Latinos don’t usually discuss. Well, one of the hosts reached out to me and wanted me to talk about how I balance being a mom, wife, and employee and all of the passion projects I was doing at the time.
So, if you’ve been with me for a while, you know that I’ve been doing a lot for the past few years, and I’ve talked about where that comes from; you can read my post about why I’m an overachiever. At the time I was a guest, I had opened an Etsy shop for notebooks and digital planners I created, I was starting a T-shirt business, I had journals on Amazon, I had launched my podcast the month prior, and of course, my writing journey was still going andddddd, I was dealing with postpartum. I was doing A LOT!
I was doing so much that I burned out at the end of that year, but that’s a different story.
The main question was how I balance it all, and my answer always was that my supportive husband and I work from home. I thought I was managing my time well at that time, but I wasn’t; I got burned out. I had to reevaluate my schedule, be honest with myself about everything I was doing, and decide what to cut back on because I am not superwoman and cannot do it all.
Fast forward to today, I’m still doing a lot, but not as much as I was before, but I still get the question, “How do I balance it all.” And the answer is - working from home helps me balance everything better.
Since I’m home all the time, and from previous experience, I’m super intentional about my schedule and time. I’ll take a few breaks throughout the day to spend time with my son; he’s two and is home with us. After a specific time of day, I’m no longer working or working on my business; it’s family time, and I’ll put my phone in the bedroom and forget about it.
I’ll schedule family outings and time for hubby and me to have our alone time.
It’s not perfect, but it works for me and my family. And since I don’t have to commute every day, I’m not tired at the end of the workday (unless I had to do a lot of research for work, then I’m mentally exhausted, and we know how that goes), so I can get dinner cooked early, and spend the evenings with my family. If I had to commute daily, I probably wouldn’t be doing the podcast and my business; I think I would only be writing.
I love working from home because of the time I spend with my family. When my daughter was younger, I barely saw her, so I appreciate that I get to see every milestone my son has.
People always want to know how to balance their lives better, but there isn’t a balance because not everything will get equal time or energy. You must be intentional with how you spend your time and set boundaries. Do what works for you and your family because it won’t look the same for everyone!
If you are a passionprenur, what does your day look like? I’d love to hear!
With Love, Heidy
